African Union: proposed new court for trying mercenaries

African Union commission chairman Alpha Oumar Konare has proposed that a new court be set-up to deal with mercenaries.
Details have not been spelt out, but a highly placed AU official, who has been involved in drawing up proposals on peace and security on the continent, said it had been suggested because the issue had become a headache to a number of countries.

He said the plan was to deal with the issue of mercenaries uniformly and to draw up a protocal as a guideline so that all countries could deal with the issue in the same manner.

"In some countries, they can get the death penalty, while in others they won't. We want to look at mechanisms where they can be dealt with in the same manner across Africa." (source)
