Rwanda genocide trials ...

this story is a few days old ....

Rwandan Court sentenced 11 to Death for Genocide .... The court gave 73 others life imprisonment, sentenced another 21 to between one and 25 years in prison, and freed 37.

All 142 people were tried at once to try and get more people through the court system. There are approx. 100,000 people still in prison awaiting trial. So far, about 6,000 have had their day in court.

In comparison, the much better funded/staffed UN war crimes tribunal in Arusha has only tried a handful. Many people are upset at how slowly things are progressing and some pin the blame on the chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. On Tuesday, Annan recommeded that somebody else be appointed chief prosecutor.
