Liberia: Charles Taylor has stepped down

Charles Taylor has stepped down ... it happened at approx 10:30 est. Till the end, he was claiming to be a victim ... blaming the US and other powers for pushing him out.

His replacement, vice president Moses Blah will be in power until October when he'll give way to an interim government which will have been selected over the next few weeks in Ghana.

But the next few days, even hours, are bound to be uneasy ... this past week, rebels threatened to resume fighting (didn't know they had stopped) if Blah is appointed AND if Taylor doesn't immediately leave the country.

Some major leaders attended Taylor's resignation ceremony. South African President Thabo Mbeki, Ghanaian President John Kufuor, Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano and Togolese Prime Minister Koffi Sama.

Word is that Chissano and Kufuor (and maybe even Mbeki) will accompany Taylor to Nigeria. I guess they're not taking any chances of his reneging on his promise to leave!
